A very nice hostel close to the center is Caravella Backpackers and the hostess Gloria (an elderly lady) is super helpful and you can book all trips and activities from here. Except for having too few power outlets in the rooms, I definately recommend it to anyone. Stayed here 6 nights; 15-21 of february.

The esplanade in Cairns is nice except for the march that you rather hoped would be the sea.
In the small park at the end of the esplande close to the marina is a public swimming pool called the Lagoon. Nice in the humid and hot sun.
